Neerja is a 2016 biographical thriller film based on the life of Neerja Bhanot, a 23-year-old flight attendant who sacrificed her life while protecting the lives of 359 passengers on Pan Am Flight 73 that was hijacked by terrorists in Karachi, Pakistan, on 5 September 1986. The film stars Sonam Kapoor as Neerja, with Shabana Azmi, Yogendra Tiku, Shekhar Ravjiani and Jim Sarbh in supporting roles. The film was directed by Ram Madhvani and written by Saiwyn Quadras and Sanyuktha Chawla Shaikh. The film received critical acclaim and numerous awards, and became one of the highest-grossing Bollywood films featuring a female protagonist.

Neerja Movie Plot
The film begins with Neerja Bhanot arriving late for a house party one evening. Her mother, Rama, expresses concern about Neerja's job as a flight attendant, suggesting that she should return to her old modelling career. Neerja insists on keeping her job. She is driven to the airport by her friend Jaideep. During the flight, Neerja reflects on her brief, unhappy arranged marriage to Naresh, a professional in Doha, Qatar, who abused her over her small dowry and inability to perform household work. She eventually returned home for a modelling contract. Naresh sent her parents a letter complaining about the dowry and their daughter's lack of domestic skills, demanding that Neerja either bring back the money or not return at all.
The next morning, four armed men belonging to the Abu Nidal Organization board the flight disguised as security officers escorting a Libyan diplomat. They take control of the plane and demand the release of their comrades who are imprisoned in Cyprus and Israel. Neerja quickly alerts the cockpit crew, who escape through an overhead hatch, leaving the plane grounded. The hijackers are enraged and threaten to kill the passengers and crew if their demands are not met. Neerja tries to calm down the passengers and crew, and also contacts the air traffic control to inform them of the situation.
The hijackers become increasingly violent and impatient as the negotiations drag on. They kill a passenger named Rajesh Kumar who tries to call his wife on a payphone. They also shoot at an American radio engineer who attempts to fix the plane's auxiliary power unit. They force Neerja to collect the passports of all the passengers to identify the Americans among them. Neerja secretly discards the passports of the Americans and hides them under a seat. She also manages to save a group of children from being executed by lying to the hijackers that they are Nepalese.
As night falls, the Pakistani authorities cut off the lights and electricity supply to the plane, hoping to disorient the hijackers and create an opportunity for a commando raid. However, this backfires as the hijackers panic and open fire indiscriminately at the passengers and crew. Neerja opens one of the emergency exits and helps many passengers escape through it. She also shields three children from the bullets with her own body. She succumbs to her injuries and dies while being taken to a hospital.
The film ends with a tribute to Neerja Bhanot, who was posthumously awarded India's highest civilian honour for bravery, the Ashoka Chakra, as well as several other national and international awards. b99f773239
